Brinjeva Gora is the famous, magical spot above Zreče, with a history that stretches back to the Bronze Age. It has seen settlements from the Celts and Romans, through to the early Slavic communities, and the ancient route along which the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius once traveled all the way to Rome. Later, monks from the Žiče Charterhouse built a pilgrimage church here, which pilgrims still visit today. This beautiful trail, which also hides the remains of the medieval Freudenberg Castle, delights every visitor.

Trail Directions:

The hike to Brinjeva Gora starts from the Zreče Thermal Spa, passing the Težak café and bakery. Under the staircase, cross Kovaška Street and continue toward the bridge over the Dravinja River.

Follow the signs that lead you up a steep asphalt climb into the forest. After a pleasant walk among the trees, a clearing awaits, where all your effort is rewarded with a stunning view of Zreče. Continue to the asphalt road and then to the crossroads.

At the junction, you can turn left toward the Zimrajh Inn, where remnants of a Celtic cemetery have been found. Beyond the inn, the path leads to the Church of St. Martin, the second oldest preserved church in the parish.

To reach Brinjeva Gora, turn right and follow the stone path into the forest. When you reach the cross, don’t miss the sign pointing to the ruins of Freudenberg Castle. The stone path then leads to the magical Brinjeva Gora, a place that offered shelter to the Celts long ago. Here, you are greeted by the former 18th-century pilgrimage Church of Matere Božje. On the way to the Church of St. Neža, you’ll enjoy another breathtaking view toward Slovenske Konjice, the wine-growing hills of Škalce, and the majestic Konjice Mountain in the distance.

Return along the marked gravel path, then turn left into the forest. You’ll reach a meadow and finally follow the familiar forest track back to Zreče.
