The Church of Holy Mother of God together with the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Vitanje form a unique tandem of the two churches, which equally constitute a single parish. While the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Vitanje represents the so called winter church, the Church of Holy Mother of God on Hriberca is a summer church.

The Church of Holy Mother of God does not show its true colours on the outside

The Hriberca, as the locals call it, stands on a hill above the Vitanje square centre and it represents a genuine crown above the wide wreath formed by the square and village houses below the hill. It was built in the Baroque style between 1747 and 1754, although the exterior hides it well.

On the inside, you are embraced by the true Baroque:

  • We are overwhelmed by the rich murals with motifs from Mary's life. The presbytery was given life by Jacob Brollo in 1893 and the nave by Anton Brollo six years later.
  • The big main altar is an exceptional example of the Baroque from the year 1770, attributed to Janez Jurij Mersi.

Josef della Croix and Wenzel Martal from Celje were involved in the organ making between 1803 and 1807.
