The Lušperg Castle, also Lušperk, Loče Castle or German Luschberg, can be found in Loška Gora in municipality of Zreče, at the beautiful confluence of Dravinja and Ljubnica Rivers. It is adorned with a picturesque view of the upper Dravinja Valley, however, this very position condemned it to later irrelevance and decay.

The Lušperg Castle in Zreče wrapped in mystery

It is not known who built the Lušperg Castle and its original image is also rather vague. There are not many ruins of the castle, but it can still be stated that it once represented a solid and honorable structure:

  • the walls were in some places 6 meters high;
  • the walls were more than a meter thick;
  • the castle had a defensive trench;
  • on the walls, the castle was guarded by corridors for defense.

The castle with this name first appeared in 1279 when Hainreich von Lusperch testified at the Maribor Castle. The later documents also prove that Hainreich was one of the Maribor knights. Nikolaj Lewpacher is mentioned as the last caretaker of the castle in 1430. After that, the importance of Lušperk diminishes. As early as 1502, it was most certainly abandoned.

A by-the-way trip

When you are on your way to Skomarje or Rogla, you must go through Loška Gora. Linger there and walk along the steep but well marked footpath along the stream and past the pastures. The trip will reward you with the beauty of the surrounding forests.
