The New Vitanje Castle

If the Old Castle is on the left bank of the Hudinja River, on the right bank reigns a much younger New Vitanje Castle, built only at the end of the 13th century. Just as its predecessor it is also a mighty building, carved into the rocks.

The New Castle represented a complex of buildings:

• a mighty and tall residential tower with auxiliary towers, a defense tower and a tower with a castle chapel in its core, and
• the Renaissance wall with five semicircular towers at its base.

For about 300 years, both castles had been in use. From the 16th century onwards, the New Castle became the center of the economic events, while the Old Castle was left at the grace and mercy of time.

4 unusual similarities with the Old Vitanje Castle:

• the New Castle also has several names. The locals call it the Upper Castle or the Krajnik Castle, named after the nearby homestead, just like the Old Castle.
• Just like the Old Castle, the New Castle was in the beginning also owned by the Krško (Gurkfeld) bishops, later they were both ruled by the Vitanje Knights, and after their extinction in 1430, the caretakers of both were mostly the same.
• A hard-to-reach path carved into the rock also ran to the New Castle.
• The Old Castle was shaken by the strong earthquake. The New Castle got struck by the lightning more than 500 years later in 1748, which caused a devastating fire. If the Old Castle was reconstructed after the natural disaster, the New one unfortunately was not that lucky.
