Rogla–Pohorje, a Destination in Slovenia Where Four Worlds Come Together

The Rogla–Pohorje destination in Slovenia is a place where you and your husband or wife can be completely different types of people, yet both find activities you enjoy - without any complaining. Are you an active hiker who loves sturdy boots and an elevated heart rate, while your partner is happiest by the pool with a beer in hand? And afterward, would you still both enjoy a walk through the old streets of a small town, a scoop of ice cream, and a glass of wine together?

Mountains and Fresh Air

Would it be enough to say that our destination offers more than 40 hiking trails of varying difficulty levels? You can find them HERE.

As an experienced hiker, even the toughest route probably won’t be a challenge for you, and you could easily cross Pohorje, rising to 1,500 meters, in just two days. Looking for a special challenge? How about taking on the Pohorje Kozjak Trail? The entire route is over 170 km long. It is one of the most anticipated trails in Slovenia, which means you absolutely have to try it.

If you’d like to persuade your more comfort-loving partner to join you on a hike, we suggest choosing an easy walk to Lovrenška Lakes. The best time to go is during the week, when the two of you can truly enjoy the peace and quiet, surrounded by trees and twenty little lakes.

Among Slovenia’s most famous lakes are Bled, Bohinj, and the “mother of Slovenian lakes,” Lake Cerknica. But Lovrenška Lakes certainly belong among the TOP 5 most beautiful lakes in Slovenia. Did you know they were formed during the Ice Age and are fed only by rainfall?

Spa & Thermal Relaxation

You have to admit—even you would enjoy warm steam on your face and the heat of a sauna after a long day in hiking boots, warming your body’s core and relaxing tired muscles.

Here, the thermal spa is not just chlorinated warm water, but a true wellness complex with healing water rich in calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen carbonate. We can confidently say that Sauna Village is among the most beautiful sauna complexes in Slovenia. Everything smells of Pohorje wood, hay, and herbs. No trace of whiteboard markers, cold coffee, or the stale air of a meeting room on an early Monday morning.

And while you drift away from the outside world, your partner lounges nearby flipping through the destination magazine, already making a list of places where you’ll go eat something delicious. So you don’t need to worry about that—you’ve already done your share of planning the getaway. Still, you whisper to him once more from your lounge chair that maybe you could visit a winemaker too, because you’ve been craving a good glass of wine for quite some time. Secretly, you hope he’ll research local wineries instead of simply ordering a bottle with dinner.

Spruce Forest

For a while now, the only green you’ve seen has been green Excel spreadsheets and your half-dead balcony plants that you just didn’t manage to water. You can barely keep yourself hydrated enough—we know. We’ve all been there. And you know what’s great? Pohorje is one of the most forested areas in Slovenia, so here your eyes and mind can finally rest.

Whether you’re at the very top of Rogla, below, above, among the treetops, or down in the valley by a stream, everything around you in our destination is GREEN.
“How do you mean below, among, above the treetops?” Simple—on Rogla, everything is possible. First, you’re beneath the trees. Then, if you decide to walk along the wooden path, you’ll be among the treetops. Finally, at the top of the tower, a breathtaking view awaits above the treetops and over the whole valley.

Why is green important? It relaxes you, restores your energy, and renews it. It calms the nervous system and lowers blood pressure. So if Barbara is bothering you with an “urgent” meeting on Friday at 2 PM, the only logical thing to do at 2:30 PM is book a weekend in one of Slovenia’s greenest destinations so we can lower your blood pressure. We know too - that Barbara’s meeting could easily have been a short email or even an SMS.

Since the greenery and forests will also have a soothing effect on your irritable partner, take a stroll through Oplotnica Gorge, where the sound of water and the deep green colors of the lowland forests will brighten your mood and lower your cortisol levels.

Town Life

By now it should be clear why the Rogla–Pohorje destination is called the meeting point of four worlds. We have towns—but don’t expect shopping malls with Zara and Hugo Boss. If you’re after a shopping experience, we may not be the right address. But you can buy local products made with great love, effort, and just two hardworking hands.

There are four larger towns with municipalities here: Slovenske Konjice, the largest, followed by Zreče, hidden-away Vitanje, and Oplotnica.

Slovenske Konjice is also part of the Association of Historic Towns of Slovenia. Ah yes—a historic Slovenian town lying beneath Konjice Castle and the wine hills of Škalce (pronounced “Shkauts”). A romantic promenade through the old town center may not impress you much, because your eyes keep wandering to the green Konjice Mountain above the town. But your darling promised you two scoops of ice cream, so you quietly stroll beside him.

And do you know what’s wonderful? From the Pohorje granite laid along the main promenade in Konjice, it takes only one step before you’re already in the forest. “You must love someone,” wrote Minatti—and you certainly do: nature, the forest, and yourself.

Well… and your darling too, who in the end really did take you to the winemaker.
